PhD position to study the determinants of skeletal diseases
Join our Genomics research line to study the determinants of skeletal diseases along the life-course
Job description
The primary objective of the project is to enhance our understanding of various types of skeletal fragility and prioritize individuals at fracture risk. More specifically, you will be:
You will have access to a large pool of epidemiological data derived from deeply phenotyped population-based and patient-based cohorts with available genetic information. Traditional cluster analysis, pooling risk factors/biomarkers, will be applied to population-based data to identify clusters. In addition, you will apply novel methodologies and platforms integrating large-scale data from distinct -omic (e.g., proteomics, metabolomics), genetics (e.g. GWAS) and clinical (e.g., imaging) sources, to develop new risk stratification and disease clustering strategies, aiming to predict and diagnose people with skeletal fragility at an early stage.
The specific focus will be on developing and validating machine learning (ML)-based stratification system, capable of identifying robust patient clusters at risk or network of biologic pathways associated with skeletal fragility. This effort is expected to drive forward advancements in personalized medicine and improved patient care.
Work environment
You will be working within the Laboratory for Population Genomics at the Internal Medicine department of Erasmus MC. The Research activities within the Laboratory for Population Genomics focus on genetics and genomics of complex traits and common diseases and are assigned to six research lines.
You will be working in Genomics research line under the supervision of Professor Dr. Fernando Rivadeneira and Dr. Katerina Trajanoska. In our research group we study the determinants of skeletal diseases along the life-course (with special focus on osteoporosis), seeking the translation of genomic discoveries into clinical applications. We do this by applying state-of-the art "big data" analytics integrating genomic functional assessments, imaging, and other forms of clinical data. The group has contributed to numerous genomic discoveries in the musculoskeletal field, achieved together with researchers from > 30 countries brought together by the Genetic Factor of Osteoporosis (GEFOS) consortium and the GEnomics of MusculoSkeletal traits TranslatiOnal Network (GEMSTONE-CA-18139) Cost Action. Here you can read more about our group.
Qualifications and skills
We are looking for a PhD candidate with a strong and enthusiastic motivation for a PhD track that combines epidemiology and translational research. You have a positive work attitude and you are able to work both in a project team and independently, taking leadership and responsibility for research tasks. In addition:
Existing computational skills (e.g., shell scripting, R, python) are an advantage. Experience in genetic data analysis, statistics, and machine learning is advantageous but not mandatory. Excellent communication skills, including writing and presentation skills in English (IELTS 7, TOEFL 600, 95 TOEFL internet based) are a prerequisite.
